Course Description: Manufacturing Technologies
Explore the frontiers of modern production in Manufacturing Technologies, a hands-on course bridging engineering design, material science, and industrial execution. Focused on three transformative pillars - Additive Manufacturing (Metal 3D Printing), Advanced Composites, and High-Precision Plastics Injection Molding - this course takes you beyond textbooks and directly into specialized production environments.
Through direct partnerships with leading technology centers, you will turn engineering theory into tangible physical hardware:
- Metal Additive Manufacturing: Experience Laser Powder Bed Fusion at the Swiss m4m Center, designing and 3D printing your own functional bottle opener while mastering parameter selection and post-processing.
- Fiber-Reinforced Composites: Engineer, layer, and cure a high-performance structural bending beam at the HFTM, optimizing fibers, resin matrices, and core materials before subjecting your beam to destructive load testing.
- Plastics Injection Molding: Tour state-of-the-art industrial injection molding plants to evaluate complex multi-cavity tooling, polymer melt rheology, and automated high-volume production cycles.
By designing, manufacturing, and benchmarking real physical components, you will develop a deep intuition for material behavior, production costs, and Design for Manufacturing (DfM).
